College Bound

At the Academy of Arts and Academics we believe that college preparation goes beyond test preparation or simply preparing for one specific course of study. We offer students a variety of ways to enrich their education and prepare for the future, from offering college level course work to internships within the community.

College Prep Course Work

We offer many College Prep courses (Designated as CP in the course title) that are designed to create scholars and citizens who use learning plans and processes that extend beyond content.

College Level Classes

There are two different ways students can take college classes. A3 offers College Now classes as part of the electives options. Successful completion of a College Now class will earn the student college credit through Lane Community College.

Junior and Senior students have the option to enroll in college classes either at Lane Community College or University of Oregon as part of their daily schedule so long as it is part of their four-year plan.

Student Led Conferences

Student-led conferences put students in charge, holding them responsible and accountable for their education. During these conferences students will provide examples of their work to demonstrate what they are learning in each of their classes.

EDCRO

EXPLORE-CREATE-DESIGN-REFINE-OWN
A3 is organized around five “Habits of the Graduate,” five behaviors that we (students, teachers, caregivers) believe are essential to succeed as an artist, a scholar, and a community member.

Whether in theatre or science, A3 students strive to exhibit these five behaviors and are evaluated on how well they perform at the end of the year, when all students lead their own “EDCRO Review” with parents, teachers, and other advocates.

Habits of Mind

In addition to the education students receive at A3, students are taught Habits of Mind to help them manage their learning by teaching them to balance content acquisition with application and evaluation. The sixteen Habits of the Mind are:

  1. Persisting
  2. Managing Impulsivity
  3. Listening with Understanding & Empathy
  4. Thinking Flexibly
  5. Thinking about Thinking (Metacognition)
  6. Striving for Accuracy
  7. Questioning & Posing Problems
  8. Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations
  9. Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision
  10. Gathering Data Through All Senses
  11. Creating, Imagining, Innovating
  12. Responding with Wonderment and Awe
